Although I can recall areas of organic chemistry from my former classes, there are some areas that are still a little fuzzy. One of those areas is isomers. This was especially fuzzy when I went into this research thinking it had something to do with The Simpson’s local baseball team ( Springfield Isotopes). Clearly I was wrong.
I’ve managed to find the basic definitions to each of the following types of isomers:
Isomer: same molecular formula, different structural formula
Constitutional isomers – same molecular formula, bonded together in different order
Stereo isomers – same molecular formula, same connections, but different geometrical positions of atoms
Enantiomers – stereo isomer with mirror image
Diastereomers - stereo isomer that is not a mirror image
Same molecules – although may have different look, they can be flipped and switched to make it the same
